Glued to the TV

That’s right.  It is another Michael Phelps night.  You know where I’ll be.  Today went pretty quickly.  This morning I will admit that I was lacking in the motivation.  I probably wasn’t as productive as I could have been but that all changed this afternoon.  I was quite productive and go go go this afternoon.

And thank you all for so many insightful comments earlier today. It simply blew me away how many other people have ’safety’ foods like oats. I always thought I was the only person who got into these ruts of being a creature of habit and being scared to break out of it. Such a balance it is between you having control over your eating and your eating having control over you!

Workout #1
Over lunch, I headed to the gym to lift.  I warmed up for 5 minutes on the treadmill at 4.0

Exercise Weight Reps/Sets
Incline bench press 65lbs 6/6
Standing Military Shoulder Press 30lbs d.b 6/6
Bicep Curls 30lbs d.b. 6/6
Tricep Dips on Machine Set to 30lbs 6/6
Squats 65lbs d.b. 6/6
Walking Lunges 2 10lb weights 3/10

*I lowered my weight on the military shoulder press because I thought my form wasn’t good enough.  I was really arching my back to help press the weights.

All this took a little over 40 minutes.

Workout #2
After work I headed back to the gym.  I was planning on swimming but unfortunately it was thundering when I was walking into the gym.  I guess that is better than already starting the swim and then have it start to thunder.  Anyway, I went up stairs to the cardio area and did the elliptical.

Interval Level Time
Warm-up 4 5 minutes
Hard 8 30 seconds
Easy 5 2 minutes
Repeat for 20 minutes
Steady 6 10 minutes
Cool down 4 5 minutes
Total: 40 minutes

Dinner
I sipped on this while I got dinner ready/during dinner.  It is from that same bottle that my mom left here.  And I still have some left!!!

We decided that we wanted burgers tonight for dinner.  I had gotten 90% lean ground beef at the store earlier this week so I seasoned that and formed it into 4 ounce raw patties.  Justin grilled them up perfectly.  We ate them on 100% sprouted wheat Ezekiel buns.  I topped mine with about 1/2T of mayo, some ketchup, romaine lettuce, about an ounce of mozzarella and tomato.    I only ate half of my burger.

On the side I cooked half of a sweet potato cut up like fries.  I ate these with about 1tsp of honey on top.  I probably could have eaten a whole potato of these tasty things!!

I also had a artichoke that I steamed up.  I dipped the leaves in about 1/2T of Annie’s Green Goddess dressing.

And to show how much I love my husband, I wanted to show the dinner that I made for him.  The exact same burger, but I made him regular potato chips and cooked green beans.  That’s right, I am a fabulous wife. :)

Dessert

Some light soy milk with a Better Bakes organic chocolate chip cookie,

Time to go focus on the important—-the olympics.  And try to figure out how I can get Missy May-Treanor’s body….

Bring on the Thursday!

Happy morning all!!  Finally made myself go to bed last night.  These Olympics are DEFINITELY throwing off my sleep schedule.  I like to be in bed by 10 and well, that gets a little difficult when the major events are going between 10-11.  Oh well, it is only 17 days total.

Anybody have big plans for the weekend?  I actually don’t, which I love!!! Tomorrow night we are eating at Todd English’s Olives for DC’s Restaurant Week.  Then Saturday evening we are going out to the in-laws for dinner because my little brother and sister in law are heading out to college.  It is hard to believe they both are in college now!!

Breakfast
I should admit why I always eat oats for breakfast.  I was thinking about this the other day.  Yes, I do love oats but they are definitely a ’safety’ food.  Does anyone else do this?  I know they will keep me full for long enough so I don’t want to break the cycle and run the risk that something doesn’t fuel/keep me full long enough?  So I get in ruts when it comes to foods that I know work for me.  Then I get a bit too anxious to want to try and switch things up.

This morning I talked myself into switching things up a bit.  I toasted 2 pieces of light whole wheat bread.  Then I cooked 1/4 cup of egg beaters with 1/2 a light laughing cow wedge in the microwave for 1 minute.  I sliced up 1/4 of a tomato and put all these together for a breakfast sandwich (with S&P).

I thought I need something else and I wasn’t feeling fruit, so I poured myself a small glass of light vanilla soy milk and added 1T of flax seed (can’t miss my flax seed!).  This was REALLY good.

All together, a very good breakfast.  Now I just hope it keeps me full and satisfied all morning.  I am thinking about trying an experiment next week for my mid morning and mid afternoon snacks.  I am thinking about getting things that do not need to be refrigerated and keep them in my car.  That way, I have to be hungry enough to walk all the way out to my car to get them.  Then I can figure out if I really need AM/PM snacks.

AM Snack
But well, that experiment will have to wait until next week.  Today’s morning snack–fresh fruit. (cantaloupe, mango and honeydew)

Lunch
I have been craving a wrap for awhile.  So I made a HUGE veggie wrap on a whole wheat tortilla.  About 1T of hummus smeared on it, 2 big leaves of romaine, cucumbers, carrots, tomato, celery and zucchini.  I add a hard boiled egg white because I know I am lifting over my lunch break and though I should make sure to have some protein. I also added some fresh cilantro, S&P.

For my side, I grabbed a nectarine and a sugar-free Jell-O tapioca pudding.

PM Snack
I have read on a few blogs lately the love of carrots and peanut butter.  I have to say I am skeptical.  So today I brought carrots and celery to dip in some PB.  I figure if I am not a fan of the carrot+PB combination I can just overload my celery and crunch away plain on the carrots.  1/4 of a piece of celery and 1/4 of a carrot. 1T of all natural peanut butter.

And because I am planning on doing a two-a-day at the gym today (yes Meg, I know you hate when I do these!) by going back after work and doing a swimming workout. I planned better for my post gym snack for the car ride home than I have in the past.  I usually grab a whole clif bar and have a major internal battle with myself not to eat the whole thing.  Well, when we did the bar reviews we had a TON of bars left over but already open, so we saved them in the fridge.  So I just grabbed a few hunks and put them in a container.  Instant portion control!

And I wanted to share my new favorite song (and also a band that I adore-Avett Brothers

Summary

About Me: 28-year old, fairly newlywed (Spring 2007) that lives in Northern VA. Work full time, love my job, have an unfortunately long daily commute.

While an obsessive long distance runner, I am still trying to recover from 2 major knee surgeries. Atleast I am able to (semi) run again.

In the past, I definitely have not always fed my body correctly to support all the running I did. Simply put, my aim was to be the smallest weight/size possible. Now, my aim is to eat healthy, well rounded and simply to enjoy as much of life without worry about the calorie content and what the tenth of a pound the scale is showing me.
