What a wonderful Friday night we had! That is one thing I love live right at DC. The restaurants, the public transportation, the sites, the bars and the weather was just perfect last night!
Yesterday recap!
I went to the gym over lunch and did the elliptical. I did intervals with the elliptical set to level 3.0 incline.

So, my planned afternoon snack yesterday was the edamame. Well, I was still hungry after eating my morning snack (fruit/wasa) and I was heading to the gym, so I had a few of the edamame nuts. And well, a few ended up being the whole little snack. I thought I may be able to make it throughout the afternoon without a snack but that ended up not working. At about 4:30 I knew I was hungry and that I couldn’t make it until dinner reservations at 8:00. So I went down to the little cafe in my office and I was thrilled to find this:

Look at this awesome ingredient list!

Here is the little snack

In general, this wasn’t all that great. It tasted WAY too sweet for me. But it did kill my hunger so I guess that is a success!
On the way home, we hit up our favorite little shop here in Falls Church–Red, White and Bleu for some wine tasting. It was beer and cheese tasting yesterday instead of wine. Too bad I didn’t know there would be cheese tasting, because I would have skipped that snack bar! The cheese was simply amazing. The beer wasn’t quite as good, needed to be a little colder, but in general….it was a great way to start the friday night!

Cheese–I did eat some more cheese but I stopped taking photos. The cheese were so so so yummy!

After all this tastiness, we got home and had about an hour till kill before we needed to head out of the house. We had this bottle of bubbly white in the fridge from a previous wine tasting so we decided to crack into that.

(Grotto Del Sole. So light, clean and bubbly. Perfect summer night sipper!)

I had two glasses before we left for the night.
Dinner
We ate dinner at Todd English’s Olives. We got seated immediately but in general the service was…..okay. Our waitress was friendly but not that attentive. It took awhile to get our drinks and bread. And then the meals just came out basically on top of each other.
I had an Agave margarita while we were there (a diet margarita. I love you Todd English!):

The selections on the menu for Restaurant Week were SLIM! There were 2 appetizers to chose from, 2 entrees and 1 dessert. I guess it meant we didn’t have to make any decisions because between the two of us, we had everything on the menu.
The bread at Todd English was amazing. They had a regular Italian bread, which was warm and sort with a good crust. And then they had this heavenly soft focaccia bread. I didn’t take any photos (sorry!) but I probably had 5 chunks of bread. At Olives, they obviously serve olives. This was really taste. Different tapenades. Justin liked them more than I did. I just used them a little bit. The bread was so tasty that I didn’t want to miss out on the fabulous flavor with the olives.
I got a watermelon and fennel salad with the dressing on the side for my appetizer.
This salad was by far the best part of the meal!! It had watermelon, fennel, olives, red onions, basil leaves and feta cheese. It was so flavorful that it didn’t need any of that salad dressing.
Justin had a gazpacho that was equally as good. It blew the gazpacho I made last week out of the water. We forgot to take a photo, but it was simply perfection.
I ordered the duck breast salad with dressing on the side as my entree. And I was 100% let down.

The salad had some hidden goat cheese (yum!) and a few pecans. The duck breast on the side was over cooked. Then inside of the salad was duck leg and wing (I think). It was cooled and very over cooked. It simply had no flavor. I love duck. I was so excited when I saw this on the menu and was simply annoyed when I tasted it. I ate about 1.5 slices of the breast and I picked out the leg/wing out of the salad and didn’t touch it.
Justin’s dinner was MUCH better. He had the rainbow trout. (He took this photo and I think was a little embarrassed to use the flash)

It was nearly charred rainbow trout (such perfect flavor) with a corn salsa on top and bacon fat (or pig fat) underneath. Delicate and so flavorful!
For some reason, I cannot think of the name of this dessert for the life of me. And the funny thing is that my mom makes basically the same thing. Anyway, I liked the blueberries the best. I ate about half of this.

When we were done with dinner, we noticed it was about 9:30 and we knew we couldn’t get back to the metro and get all the way home before Michael Phelps swam, so we decided to go to a bar to watch it. (Those smallish drinks at Olives were 13+ each so we knew we were getting out of there!)
On the walk over to Old Ebbitt’s, we just happen to walk past here. I thought I would take a photo to show you all (I felt so touristy!)

At Old Ebbitt’s we each got a drink. I had a Southern Iced Tea. It was iced tea, lemon and bourbon I believe. It was actually very good!

And then we watched Michael Phelps….hmmmm, I think it was second. Justin thought it was first. I almost feel bad for Milorad Cavic. He just had a bad finish and didn’t hit the touchpads hard enough. But then again, they always teach you to hit those things hard because they are sensitive. No matter what, it was exciting to watch. Everyone at the bar was screaming and clapping (and then arguing). It was a lot of fun.
I had this little guy when I got home.

Wow. I obviously ate a lot. And drank a fair amount (4 drinks). It was fabulous though!!
Now off to the gym (no bike ride because Justin hurt his heel really badly playing soccer yesterday and I don’t really like doing long rides alone) and a stop by the farmer’s market. Get off the computer and go enjoy your Saturday (preferably outside!!)
