I live in Northern Virginia
My name is Fitzalan but people call me Alan, Fitz, Al, Fitzy, etc. I blame my parents for this one. And it is pronounced Fitz-Alan. People butcher it daily or assume that I am a male.
I grew up as a very active person–I was on a swim team by 3 years old and continued to swim competitively through high school. I started soccer by 8 and picked up lacrosse at the end of middle school. I also added field hockey and horseback riding in high school. I played one year of collegiate water polo and I can proudly say we were a top 25 team (I think that is because there aren’t more than 25 female water polo teams.)
I attended an all girl’s boarding school for high school, which I hated at the time and now wouldn’t change for the world.
I met my husband while in graduate school at Virginia Tech. Go Hokies!
I have had issues in the past with obsessing over calorie counting, restricting and potentially overexercising.
I used to be a long distance runner/triathlete until I tore my MCL and did some meniscus damage in February of 2007 while snowboarding. I had 2 reconstructive surgeries (most recently in October 2007) and I am able to get back in the gym but it is still an on-going battle.
I am a certified personal trainer (NASM), but I do not work in this field anymore. I loved being a trainer and really really enjoyed all the coursework and studying that went into getting certified. If I could do it all over again, I probably would have gone into medicine or nutrition. But I already have a master’s in something else and I am not in anyway motivated to return to school (nor is my bank account!)
My husband and I just built a house and we are SO excited (and overwhelmed!) by it!
I still am a gym rat and I am so happy I am able to (semi) run again. I love to ride outside on my Jamis but unfortunately I don’t have enough time to ride more than once or twice a week (during the summer/spring). I haven’t touched my bike in 4 months, shamefully!

Hey there Fitzalan! I just came across your blog and I must tell you I love it! I think your perspective on food and goals for the future are awesome, and I think blogging is a great vehicle to strive for health! Your meals look awesome, and I love seeing how you incorporate your hubby into your healthy eating habits.
I too am from the DC area (actually in DC) and I look forward to seeing your perspective on DC healthy eating (esp. at restaruants- I ADORE Godron Biersch!).
I am adding you to my blogroll if you don’t mind, because I can’t wait to read more!

Hi! I loved your blog! I think we started blogging at the same time. I love to run and I hope see you running as soon as possible. I am going to add you to my blogroll if you don’t mind.

How funny that you went to Chatham Hall and are about the same age as a childhood friend of mine! She went as well, and I think would be 29ish now. I’m originally from just south of you in NC. I ran across your blog via KathEats which is one of my fave reads for tasty healthy meals.
omg! finally someone who can understand! haha I actually live in the Northern VA area too – how funny is that. I hate prednisone more than anything – its seriously such a nasty nasty drug, it gives you osteoporosis, makes you eat like your pregnant, gives you a moon face, and may redistribute the fat in our body! its hard to believe that the benefits outweigh how harmful it is – thanks so much for commenting, you are really sweet, I just added you to my blogroll as well. hope you have a great day! =)
Sweet and Fit: Prednisone is one nasty nasty drug. It does scare me what this stuff does to my body. Too bad it doesn’t redistribute the fat right out of our bodies…not hourd everything we consume. Glad to find another NOVA girl with some similar issues. I just added you to my blog roll also!
